Cal-Sag Cycles - Blue Island
History ‘n Hollywood Bike Ride

Flags of Our Fathers on Highland Ave in Blue IslandThis Friday, June 15 we’ll be hosting another bike ride in Blue Island: History n Hollywood!  We’ll be stopping at sites featured in movies and television while exploring local history… and ending with a special sneak-peak screening at THE LYRIC THEATER!  The screening will be open just for bike riders, so you won’t want to miss it!

Active Transportation Alliance will be meeting commuters at the Vermont Street Station on Friday evening.  We’ll gather at Uptown Park (NE corner of York and Western Ave) between 5:30 and 6:30pm.  The patio will be open at Tenochtitlan and we encourage everyone to grab a bite to eat!  We’ll begin and end here, so we can hang out with Eli after the ride as well.

The ride pushes off from the Park at 6:30pm.  Our route will take us past sites seen in Early Edition, Flags of Our Fathers, The Express, and The Rite (see it on google maps).  We cruise at an easy pace, stopping at each site.  The route is a little over a mile-and-a-half, so even part-time riders will be comfortable and are encouraged to come!  Heck, bring the whole family!  We will be riding as a group on Western Avenue in Uptown, so please be safe and considerate to your fellow cyclists and others that we share the road with.  Brush up on safety tips from Active Trans.

If you missed out last year, pics are here on flickr.  Looks like fun, right?!  Don’t miss out on this unique ride and special tour of The Lyric Theater.  As an added bonus, the first 50 riders get a Bike Commuter Challenge goodie bag courtesy of Active Trans.

TGIF Picnic + Cal-Sag crew

We were pleased to be invited to the season’s first TGIF Picnic in Blue Island, held every Friday in summer at park in Uptown BI located at the corner of York and Western Ave.

Along with other community groups, Cal-Sag Cycles was on hand to present info about safe bike riding, repair tips, and other skills needed to have a terrific summer of bike riding. Teams of three kids signed up as presenters for each half-hour. As a bonus, we encouraged people to get started on the Bike Commuter Challenge, Active Trans’ annual bike to work week event, kicking off on Saturday, June 11 - along with our GRAND OPENING of our shop at 12840 Western Ave.

T-shirts were designed by Miguel Salgado and printed by David Castillo. Cal-Sag Cycles supports local artists and we think you should too! Learn more about their work at www.miguelsalgado.net and www.davidcastillo1209.com - get in touch with them for your next project.

Bike to Work!

Cal-Sag Cycles opens its doors on Saturday, June 11 - the start of Active Transportation Alliance’s Bike Commuter Challenge. Coincidence? Of course not!

Cal-Sag Cycles is here to help Blue Islanders get their bikes back on the road. And what better way to start the summer than by biking to work? We’re all proud that BI is such a great place to get around by bike. Wether you’re doing regular errands, dining out at a fantastic local restaurant, heading to the park, or exploring our historic neighborhoods, a bicycle is the way to get around town!

For the week of June 11-17 Active Trans challenges Chicagoland residents to get to work by bike. It’s easy to do with these helpful how-to tips. The City of Blue Island is doing their part, and for the second year the Community Development Department is sponsoring a Bike to Work Week team. Biking to work is not only fun and healthy, but it’s GREEN - think of all the money you’ll be saving on gas :)

Cal-Sag Cycles is offering two opportunities to get your bike ready for the ride to work:

  • On Friday, June 10 find our team, along with local bike advocates, at the season’s first TGIF picnic. Cal-Sag Cycles will be on hand at 11a to assist in safety checks and offer bicycle maintenance.
  • Come to Cal-Sag Cycles, 12840 Western Ave, on Saturday, June 11 from 10a - 2p for our GRAND OPENING! It will be fun for all ages, and the Cal-Sag Cycles team will be offering FREE bicycle maintenance to all in a festive, block party atmosphere.

Later in the week, the City of Blue Island will be hosting a Bike After Work event at Restaurante Tenochtitlan, 12947 Western Ave., on Thursday, June 16 from 5:30p to 7:30p. The Blue Island Bicycle Club will help lead a leisurely bike tour of Blue Island, leaving Tenochtitlan at 7:30p. You won’t want to miss it!
